This part of the study describes the requirements of the health care sector on electronic signature services and proposes a technology of choice. The differences between a traditional paper document and digital electronic documents are analysed. The core purposes of an electronic signature function (ES) are to: Authenticate computer users, authenticate document originators, and protect the document integrity and ensure that contents and signature are bound together. The proposed technical solution is based on personal smart cards used by the health care professionals as an instrument to perform the cryptographic calculations for the digital signature and to protect the private key.
